I have often wondered why MacPorts where not part of the initial Mac OS X operating system or at least an option. Being that the base of the operating system is now FreeBSD. So I set off to investigate how I would get a ports system on my Mac. I discovered that Darwin which used to be the name of the group who took care of the port system for the Mac OS had changed to MacPorts. The MacPorts site itself does not have allot of information about the history of who and why they are maintaining the port tree for Mac. So there will be no history lessons here today.
